上星期日是 UK Snooker Championship 2023 總決賽，我最愛的 Ronnie 又贏冠軍了，恭喜恭喜。
賽後主持人 Hazel 訪問 Ronnie 時說了一句 “Cut the mustard” 。我當時反應 ” Cut the mustard? ” 腦裡出現了一把刀在切黃色芥辣醬，超搞笑。
Cut the mustard 到底是甚麼意思？
原來是指符合預期，達到水準的意思。例子：I didn’t cut the mustard as a hockey player.
Cut the mustard 的起源
網上未有找到一致的解釋，有說這源於美國二十世紀初，這個用法的第一個紀錄來自 1907 O Henry The Heart of the West 的故事：’ I looked around and found a proposition that exactly cut the mustard.’
來自 world wide words 的解釋：
The modern sense of the idiom is “to succeed; to have the ability to do something; to come up to expectations”. But why that exact phrase, nobody seems to know.
另一個說法來自 Guardian ，mustard 並不是指芥辣醬，而是指植物 mustard。
收割Mustard 是一件艱辛又費力的工作，農夫需要用極鋒利的鐮刀收割。若鐮刀變鈍，便不能 cut the mustard ，然後引伸成未能達致期望及功能的意思。 😄
